It's All In The Family

In 1927 Grandpa Charlie started up a printing business.  I never get tired of hearing stories about my grandpa, especially because I was so young when he died.  I only have one memory of seeing him in his house, leaning against the fireplace.  Who knows, it has been so long, maybe it's just a picture that I saw once that made an impression - but I'm hoping it's my memory.

KSL Radio recently called us up for an interview about the print shop.  This is what aired on the radio last week.

This is Chris Redgrave for Zions Bank Speaking on Business.
I've made some interesting observations as I've met business owners for this program. One of those observations involves garages. However, while many of those structures shelter our vehicles and tools, others have housed the beginnings of very successful businesses.
Take Jaffa Printing for example. This Salt Lake City-based company that started in Charlie Jaffa'sgarage in 1927 has successfully made it into the second generation of family ownership, with Charlie's son Bob. They're quickly involving the third generation, with all six of Bob's adult kids now involved.
Interestingly enough, family-based companies like Jaffa are a major contributor to our U.S. economy. They're now responsible for 60 percent of the nation's employment and 78 percent of the new jobs created.
The best part of this story is that Charlie started his business without any printing experience. He needed a way to support his family and was interested in printing. . . so he started creating business cards and flyers for other companies in his Avenues neighborhood. It didn't take long for him to outgrow his garage and move to a bigger space. He put his company on hold for a number of years while he fought in World War II. This did not stop Charlie from coming home and continuing to grow his business.
Today, Jaffa Printing has found its niche in providing beautiful wedding invitations. Bob, the current company president, said they also do four-color printing for everything from brochures and booklets to product sheets and mailers. In the last few years, the company has acquired digital process that have has kept them up to date with current trends in technology. A growing number of orders come over the Internet. This is a far cry from Bob's start as a small child when he helped his dad handset each letter.
So, what's been Jaffa Printing's secret for success over the years? Bob says it's their love for the work they do and ability to go the extra mile for clients. They've also avoided any major debt while developing a strong and loyal customer base.
For Zions Bank, I'm Chris Redgrave, speaking on business.

Teagan's Wedding Invitation

Remember this photo shoot with cute bride Teagan?
Want to see what we did with her engagement photos? Here is her wedding invitation...

The invitation is bursting with personality with a large landscape photo & a beautiful name monogram on the front. It pulls open from there to reveal five additional photos.

Teagan did a great job choosing coordinating fonts & a deep rich color for her invitation. It has the look & feel of a very expensive announcement.

The neat thing about this design is that because it all prints on one side of the paper, it is surprisingly affordable! If you'd like to have an invitation like this one, you can find all the details here.
Happy Wedding Planning!

Engagement Photo Session: Interview with the Bride

I recently interviewed cute bride Teagan
about her engagement session with Dave from Jaffa Photography.

How did you pick your photographer?
My sister and brother had Dave do their weddings and I loved how their pictures turned out!

How did you pick the location for your photo shoot?

I wanted to go somewhere that was unique and so I asked Dave what places he has liked in the past. He gave me a list of some places and I decided from there!

You guys look adorable! How did you decide what to wear?
Ohhh thank you!! We picked Rick's shirt first and then I went and picked a couple of shirts that would match it! We should have done it the other way around, boys shirts are a lot easier to find than girls!

Which do you prefer? Candid shots or posed?

Honestly I like both, but I did like it when Dave (the photographer) posed us and took a couple of shots and then told us to look at each other and of course when Dave says “Rick kiss her” that’s my favorite!

Did you come up with any of your own poses or did you let the photographer do all of that?

Rick & I had some ideas and Dave was more then happy to do them for us!

Were you nervous at all during the shoot?

No way! Dave makes it so comfortable and so fun!

What did you like about your photographer?
He was very personable. He gets to know everyone in the family and anyone helping out with the wedding not just the bride and groom. He is very fun and up beat all the time! Even if we have seen each other 2 days out of 3 he still is just happy to be there joking around and having fun!

What were your hopes? Did the photos meet your expectations?

I wanted good pictures just like everyone does, but I got AMAZING pictures!! Yes they did!

Which photo is your favorite and why?
I have so many favorites, it’s hard to just think of one. There is one where we are holding hands and looking at each other, it just amazes me that he can capture the love and sparkle in our eyes. All the pictures by the sunset are my favorite as well!

Do you and your groom agree on your favorite photos? If not, what is his favorite and why?
We agree on most of them, but his favorite is the one where we are sitting on the ground and were pullin our serious faces. He says it shows off our eyes and characteristics!

If you had to do it all over again is there anything you would do differently?
Not a chance! I loved every minute of it and can't wait for the wedding now!

Many thanks to Teagan for sharing her amazing photos with us!

Save Money on the Postage of Wedding Invitations

Looking for ways to save money on the postage of your wedding invitations?

There are 3 things to pay attention to when choosing an invitation that will help you save money on postage in the long run
.

- The 1st is the shape of the invitation. Anything that is in the shape of a perfect square whether it’s a large 7 inch square or the smaller 5.5 inch square will cost more to mail.

The reason for this is that the square shape isn't compatible with the post office machines & has to be hand-cancelled which in turn will cost 20 cents more to mail than a standard invitation. So instead of 44 cents to mail, you will be paying 64 cents to mail a square design.

- The 2nd thing that you need to pay attention to is the weight of the invitation. A 44 cent stamp will cover anything up to an ounce. If the invitation, envelopes & enclosures, together, weigh over an ounce it will run an additional 17 cents per additional ounce more to mail.

- The 3rd way you can save money on postage is on the RSVP. If you choose to have your guests respond by phone number or e-mail rather than doing a mail back RSVP with an envelope, then you don’t have to pay postage on the envelopes that your guests would normally mail back to you & at 44 cents each... the savings will add up fast!

If including a mail back RSVP is still important to you, consider ordering a postcard style which is less expensive at only 28 cents each to mail.

Happy wedding planning!

The Winning Invitation for the Ultimate Utah Wedding

The television audience voted! The winning invitation that Nick & Whitnee will use for their Ultimate Utah Wedding is invitation #4, the Jackson Invitation from Jaffa Printing.

The Jackson Invitation is a beautiful contemporary invitation that features 7 candid photos of Nick & Whitnee. The prominent colors are red & black & white which are the couple's wedding colors. It has a fun tab on the right with their wedding date & the invitation pulls open from there to reveal 4 additional photos overlayed on the background photo of the stadium where Nick played football.

The television audience from abc 4's Good Things Utah did a wonderful job picking an invitation that represents the couple & incorporates their theme of the Ultimate Utah Wedding. Whitnee hand selected all of the photos for this invitation and it was her favorite from the very beginning. Congratulations Nick & Whitnee! We sure enjoyed working with you & wish you the best on your Wedding Day!
